The New York State Veterans' Home at Montrose is a healthcare facility owned
and operated by the New York State Department of Health for Veterans' and their
dependants.
The New York State Veterans' Home at
Montrose is a long term care skilled nursing facility. We are located in Montrose
NY, and we serve the lower Hudson Valley region. We provide care for veterans and
their dependents. Our facility is clean and pleasant, and our staff are friendly and
professional. We welcome you to a guided tour upon request!
The building is a single story design with six
"Y" shaped residential wings of 42 beds each, accomidating 252 beds. Seven bed
"clusters" in each nursing wing are designed for maximum privacy and
convienience of each resident. Other features of our facility include a spacious
multipurpose room with a full service "deli", a 27' panaramic fish tank, and a
gift shop.
Each of the Home's residential units
provides double rooms and some singles, each with an adjoining bath. Each occupant has
a window with a lovely view, comfortable seating area, and a spacious closet.
There are also many other comfortable areas for relaxing, visting with other
residents and family that are indoors and outside. Our single story building allows
every resident to have a view of the beautiful gardens or the grounds from their room.>
The Environmental Services
Department at the New York State Veteran's Home at Montrose are responsible for
maintaining the water, electric, sewage, heating, ventilating, air conditioning,
telephone and television services. We also inspect and maintain our kitchen
equipment, medical equipment, fire alarm and sprinkler systems, as well as general
maintenance of facility equipment, vehicles and grounds maintenance. Our staff has
a sovereign goal to dedicate ourselves to our resident's happiness, health and
welfare at all times. Our direct daily contact and total concern for our residents
assures we are a "HOME".
Our housekeeping Department has the
basic and vital task in keeping the environment aseptic, pest free, and
aesthetically pleasing for our residents. The washing of resident clothing is
accomplished in-house or sent out to our outside linen company. We take great pride
in what we do to make this facility a more pleasurable environment.
The New York State Veteran's
Home at Montrose features a spacious Multipurpose Room that includes:
- A 27' (3,200 gallon) panoramic aquarium
- Full service "deli" area for residents, visitors, and staff
- Gift shop
Business Office - The Business Office at The New York State Veterans Home at
Montrose oversees: Billing, Resident Accounts, Purchasing and Medicaid/Medicare.
Resident Accounts - Residents may deposit funds into an interest bearing trust
fund account through the Home's Residents Accounts Office located in the business
office suit. This fund is available to residents seven days/twenty four hours a week
to pay for personal items or services such as Barber/Beauty, Telephone or clothes. A
statement is automatically provided to residents or designated representative or upon
request. Banking is also provided at every wing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Purchasing - The NYS Veterans Home at Montrose is required to follow all procurement
regulations of the State of New York.
The New York State Veterans' Home recognizes
that there are some residents who choose to smoke. We have provided a "Smoking
Room" for these residents so that they are able to enjoy themselves and be safe
while smoking. The room is set up so other residents who choose not to smoke are not affected.
The Medical Department at the New York
State Veterans' Home at Montrose is committed to providing superior quality of care to
its residents and preventative health maintenance to its employees through its
comprehensive medical service programs. We employ a full-time in-house medical team
comprised of:
- Two Board Certified family Nurse Practitioners
- One Board Certified Cardiologist Attending Physician
- Medical Director who is a fellowship trained and a Board Certified Geriatrician

New York State Veterans'
Home at Montrose offers state of the art vision, dental, and podiatry care. In-house
vision care is offered to residents in an interdisciplinary team concept offers our
residents a higher quality of vision services. Dental services are an important and
integral part of patient care. Appointments are arranged through the in-house Clinic
or outpatient services can be supplied.
The New York State Veterans'
Home boasts of a newly equipped Rehabilitation Department ready to meet your short
and long term needs. The professional staff works closely as a team to help people
achieve their maximum potential.
Our full-time Speech Language pathologist evaluates and treats swallowing
dysfunction, aphasia, cognitive impairment, voice and speech disorders, and provides
treatment in the use of hearing devices. The Speech Pathologist is dedicated to
ensuring that our residents communicate their thoughts and needs to the best of their
ability and that they are able to swallow safely to maintain the highest quality
of life.
The Physical Therapists develop a plan to improve the person's movement and
function. New equipment recently purchased at the Veterans' Home consists of
Access Weight Trainer, Ultrasound, Electric Muscle Stimulation, Fluid therapy,
and Whirlpool treatments. The Physical Therapists frequently work with individuals
who have had strokes, fractures, joint replacement, and arthritis, to name a few.
Occupational Therapists work closely with people to increase their activities
of daily living and independent function. Activities may range from dressing and
self care to food preparation. Treatments for these skills bridge the gap between
nursing home placement and successful return to the community.
The Food and Nutritional
Services Department at the New York State Veterans' Home at Montrose provides
nutritional meals to all the residents of the Home. All residents receive not
only the meal plan prescribed for them by our Medical Staff, but snacks throughout
the day. Every effort is made to meet the personal wishes of our residents at
meals and at snack time. The Home also offers meals to residents' visitors for
a nominal fee. Daily meals as well as holiday meals are available to visitors either
on the units or in the Multipurpose Room.
The Admissions Department is responsible
for the overseeing of the admissions process. They are available to give personal
tours of the facility, and meet with you to discuss any questions you may have

Social Workers are committed
to insuring that your loved ones are treated with dignity, respect and have
the optimum quality of life. We will assist you and your loved ones with getting
acquainted with the unit, staff and facility. The Social Worker acts as a liaison
and resident advocate for you and your loved one regarding individual issues or
other departments to ensure that your personal, social and emotional needs are
being met. Your Social Worker continually monitors for changes in mood, behavior
and cognition. Social Workers coordinate with the Care Plan team individualized
treatment Care Plans for your loved ones in the facility. When appropriate Social
Workers will meet with you and loved ones to discuss interventions to address the
following types of needs but not limited to adjustment to long term care, grief
counseling, support groups, and discharge planning where appropriate.
Medicaid is a program for New Yorker's who
cannot afford to pay for medical care. You may be covered by Medicaid if:
- You have high medical bills
- You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- You meet certain income, resources, age, or disability requirements.
- The home will assist you to obtain Medicaid coverage through The Medicaid
Coordinator's Office
